HELENA - There's a new resource to help combat underage drinking. The State of Montana and the Department of Public Health and Human Services just launched a new website.
It details various studies that show parental disapproval of underage drinking is the top reason kids choose not to drink alcohol.
It also addresses the legal ramifications of parents who host drinking parties and provides ideas and programs to increase communication between adults and their children.
Alcohol is the number-one drug of abuse for Montana youth. A 2008 statewide survey of 17,000 students showed 21 percent of 8th graders, 41 percent of 10th graders and 53 percent of 12th graders used alcohol within the last 30 days.
The results also indicated more than one in 10 8th graders, one in four 10th graders and one in three 12th graders engaged in binge drinking.
