POLSON- State engineers are hoping a small highway project near Polson will help pay in big safety benefits.
Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has worked up plans for the improvements for a busy stretch of Highway 35 about three miles east of town.
Engineers are proposing to install a 6-foot wide paved should on the outside of the curve where the highway turns north to go up the east shore of Flathead Lake, where Fulkerson Lane angles off the highway and turns south. MDT says several crashes have been caused by the existing design of the intersection.
A 4-foot shoulder would be added on the inside of the curve, as well as better lighting and the slope of the road would be flattened on both sides.
The project is tentatively scheduled for construction in 2014 and MDT is currently taking comments on the project.
