ELMO - A male para-glider is dead after he went for a jump near Elmo.
Lake County Sheriff Jay Doyle says on Friday around 7 p.m., two men hiked up through a south facing drainage to the top of the Chief Cliff rock face, just northeast of Elmo.
One of the men jumped from the cliff and successfully landed in a designated open field of the rock quarry. The other man filled his chute, but pulled it back in and appeared not to jump.
Observers on the ground assumed he was going to hike back down, and that was the last time the group saw the man.
Later that night around midnight, the Lake County Sheriff's Office was notified the para-glider was missing and a Search and Rescue unit was mobilized.
A night search ensued, but the man was not found, but then on Saturday morning a helicopter resumed the search and at 8:30 the man was found dead at the bottom of Chief Cliff.
The name of the victim is not being released at this time.
Lake County Search and Rescue, Flathead Tribal Police, Flathead Tribal Fish and Game, CAN-AM Search and Rescue and Chief Cliff Fire Department all assisted in the search and recovery efforts for the missing man.
