A sweet harmony of educational opportunity and musical expertise was brought to the Bitterroot Valley in what valley residents hope is just the first of many offerings.
‘Explore the Wondrous World of Piano Music with Steven Helsa and friends' was a four week course on music appreciation. Internationally renowned pianist Steven Helsa was joined by pianists Margaret McDuffie Whatley and Barbara Blegen.
The mixture of humor, lecture, music reading, duets and solos brought the nearly 120 students back each week to the Friday morning sessions.
"My students think I knew Beethoven," said Helsa and so it seemed as he shared about Beethoven's life, music, and detailed progression as an artist.
Mozart, Schubert, and Bach were just a few of the artists lectured on - their history, music, lives and friendships.
The series was sponsored by the University of Montana Continuing Education, College of Visual and Performing Arts, and the Bitterroot College Program and was hosted at the Hamilton Performing Arts Center.
These groups are in the planning stages of offering more classes. For more information call 375- 0100 or go on line to www.umt.edu/bcp/continuingeducation.aspx
