Monte Dolack creates painting for new state plate

MISSOULA - A special moment between a dog and his owner has been captured forever by the talents of Missoula's best known artist, and now it can grace state license plates for a good cause.

On a summer day, five years ago, Monte Dolack was taking photos on the shores of Placid Lake when a kayaker and her dog, named Sweep, passed quietly on the water.

Dolack painted a picture of that moment and that started the process of creating Montana's newest license plate: This one to benefit Montana's 54 state parks.

The artist and his inspiration revealed the new plate on Tuesday, one that will help keep state parks funded.

"This woman came by on her kayak, just glided by and it was such a great image," Dolack said. "To have her come by unexpectedly at that moment is a gift."

The kayaker, Carol Fulton, says she saw the original painting on Dolack's Facebook page, recognized herself and contacted him.

Fulton added that her dog was afraid of the water.

"So we spend time on the kayak getting used to it, so that was a moment we were bonding so it's extra special for us."
