MANHATTAN - One man is dead after an accident on Interstate 90 this afternoon.

The Montana Highway Patrol said a family travelling east on the interstate broke down with a flat tire on a bridge east of Manhattan. The driver put out a hazard marker and was attempting to change the tire when another vehicle struck him at highway speed and side-swiped the van.

Gallatin County Sheriff deputies were first on scene, closed the eastbound lane from Manhattan to Belgrade and turned the investigation over to Montana Highway Patrol.

Montana Highway patrol District Commander Capt. Mike Reddick said the driver who struck the man seemed to have swerved over, but officials don't yet know why.

Investigation is ongoing, and officials don't know if speed or alcohol were involved. The accident backed up eastbound traffic from Manhattan to Logan about 5 miles as MHP worked to re-route traffic either through Manhattan to the north or the Churchill area to the south.
