Group working to preserve mural art in Uptown Butte

BUTTE - Historic ghosts signs are slowly being lost in Uptown Butte, but starting Friday a step will be taken restore them.

"It's a portal to the past," George Everett, director of Mainstreet Uptown Butte, said of the fading murals. "It makes it easy to imagine what Butte was like in its earliest day."

Mainstreet Uptown Butte invited a group called Walldogs, who specialize in mural art, to analyze what is left of the historic ghost signs in Uptown Butte.

A recent inventory found nearly 100 ghost signs in the area, according to Everett. Many are near the point of no return.

Two members of Walldogs will tour Uptown Butte Friday and evaluate the ghost signs and then on Saturday, they will hold a meeting at the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives.

They will discuss what needs to be done and how they can preserve the signs, with Mainstreet Uptown Butte hoping to restore at least one sign this summer and potentially paint a new one.
