Defendant testifies in Helena double-murder trial

HELENA - The double-murder trial of a Helena woman continued on Tuesday, with Michelle Gable taking the stand in her own defense.

Gable is charged with shooting and killing her husband Joe and Sunday Bennett in October 2011.

Gable told jurors she only wanted to talk to her husband, despite bringing guns into the apartment and hiding them early that October morning.

Being transported to the witness stand in a wheelchair, Gable presented herself as a victim, rather than an accused murderer, to the jurors.

Tears streaming down her face, she recounted the incident, "And my face is down and he's beating me right here and it is the most hollow sound I have ever heard."

She then stated she was the one who had brought the guns to the apartment, stashing them on the stairway under some clothing.

It was then that they struggled with the gun and it went off, shooting her in the finger and then hitting him.

"I thought he had the other gun in his hand," Gable testified.

"And what did you do?" asked her defense attorney, Randi Hood.

Gable replied, "I looked down where he dropped the one and I picked it up."

"And what did you do?" asked Hood.

"I fired it," Gable cried.

A trip downstairs out the back door brought her face to face with Sunday, where she blindly shot at her.

"I thought she was going to kill me," testified Gable.

Gable then testified that she fired her way into the front door to get to the bedroom and get Joe's keys to take him to the hospital.

After firing her way into the locked door, she said Sunday was inside and lunged at her.

"I can't see what she has in her hand. I reach up with this hand that's bleeding all over and it bled around and I'm trying to push her back, at the same time, I'm reaching over for the gun," said Gable.

Gable testified previously she had hired a private investigator to follow her husband and Cooley.

"Like I said, I did not know who Sunday was, she was communicating with her husband who she was running from. I was worried that we were going to be a victim," said Gable.
