HELENA- The Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks (FWP) Commission voted to approve a commercial fishing operation on two lakes near Helena.

The permit would allow Tracy Fortner of Townsend to commercially harvest carp. If it gets final approval, Fortner would be able to net carp on Canyon Ferry and Lake Helena.

By law, FWP can approve one commercial fishing operation for each body of water.

The state began issuing commercial fishing permits in 2005. At that time an environmental assessment was prepared to evaluate the impacts on the environment.

On Thursday, the Commission voted unanimously to approve the permit. With this vote it's now open for public comment and a final vote will be taken in March.
