The Billings ExxonMobil Refinery is cleaning up a small oil sheen in a side-channel of the Yellowstone River downstream from the plant.
An oil response team from the Billings refinery has placed absorbent booms in the channel, and a refinery spokesperson, Pam Malek, says the sheen has been contained.
The Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the Montana Disaster and Emergency Services were notified of the the sheen late Friday afternoon, and a Montana DEQ spokesperson, Mary Ann Dunwell, says the situation warrants monitoring due to recent oil spills in the state and country.
The source of the sheen has not yet been identified. Malek says ExxonMobil does not have any pipelines or other oil containing equipment near the site of the sheen.
Exxon will continue investigating the incident, and Dunwell says the state will monitor the situation until the source has been identified.
