GARRISON- Crews are battling a wildfire which has broken out Garnet Mountains.
Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) crews are are working to put out the blaze which is burning near Wildlife Study Area near Windy Rock Mountain, near Avon.
Some 53 personnel are working to establish a fire line around the eight acre wildfire which is located in extremely rough terrain in beetle-kill timber according to the DNRC.
DNRC Fire Prevention Coordinator Cindy Super says the fire was first spotted at around 4 p.m. on Thursday and crews were there within two hours.
Engine crews from the DNRC and two DNRC initial attack helicopters were able to safely stop the fire Thursday night according to Super.
Meanwhile, a 20-person crew from the Montana Department of Corrections worked on the fire throughout the night and the Flathead Hotshots along with other crews arrived on Friday morning.
Super says that the cause of the blaze isn't known, but it most likely was sparked by a lightning strike earlier this week.
