We sent the following questions to candidates for public office; their replies are posted verbatim below, with a link to the candidate's website (if available) or Facebook page (if available) at the bottom.
1. Biographical Information
Name: Steve Daines
Age & Birthplace: 50, Van Nuys, CA. Parents returned to Montana when he was one year old
Current Occupation: Businessman. Former Vice President of Right Now Technologies. RightNow was founded and headquartered in Bozeman and is Bozeman's largest commercial employer.
Education: B.S. Chemical Engineering Montana State University
Political Experience: Have spent entire career in the private sector
2. What are your top priorities this election?
Job creation and economic growth
Passing a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
Reducing onerous regulations from agencies such as the EPA
3. What can Congress do to create jobs in Montana?
Creating jobs in Montana and around our country starts with reducing the uncertainty that is currently facing job creators. We can do that by flattening and simplifying the tax code, reducing burdensome regulations that are slowing economic growth, and reducing our debt and deficits by balancing our budget.
4. If elected, what will be the first bills you work on?
If elected, on day one I will begin working to pass legislation that will require congress to balance the Federal Budget. I will fight to reduce job-killing regulations like those from the EPA that recently forced the closing of a power plant in Yellowstone County that caused 35 Montanans to lose their jobs.
5. Why should Montanans vote for you and not your opponent?
I have spent the past the past 28 years working in the private sector creating jobs, balancing budgets, and solving tough problems. For the past 12 years I have worked to build RightNow Technologies, a software company founded and headquartered in Bozeman, from less than 100 employees to over 1100. I am the only candidate in the race with a proven track record of creating good paying private sector jobs. I will take that experience to Washington D.C. and work to create an environment in which small businesses can thrive.
