MISSOULA- Homeword of Missoula celebrated the grand opening of its newest affordable housing complex on Thursday evening.
The local non-profit recently finished construction of the Solstice Apartments overlooking the Clark Fork River off of Russell Street and the building features 34 apartments designed for people making $9 to $10 an hour, but there are only three units left for rent.
"We think it's really important to give back to our community and to build a strong community. And we do that one, by building housing, because we have to house our workforce. A lot of us who grew up here can't even afford to buy a home," Homeword Housing Development Director Heather McMilin said.
Each apartment includes a private outdoor space, balconies and storage units. The new building also houses a community training room, where Homeword and other non-profits will host classes open to everyone.
Homeword officials also said Thursday that they were committed to using local materials and local contractors during construction.
